Apartment Air Pressure

Air pollution from another apartment will flow into your apartment if:

  1. There are any openings or porous materials between the two apartments, and
  2. Air pressure in your apartment is lower than air pressure in an adjoining polluted apartment.

To always have fresh clean air in your apartment, you can do the following:

  1. Install a mechanical ventilation system to provide a controllable source of filtered fresh air.
  2. Bring in a moderate volume of fresh filtered air to meet your needs.
  3. Seal the air leaks. If you are successful in sealing most of the air leaks between your apartment and adjoining apartments, then you will only need to bring in a small volume of fresh air to maintain the desired air pressure in your apartment. National standards suggest providing at least 15 cubic feet of fresh clean air per minute for each occupant.
  4. Use a Pressure-Detective™ air pressure sensor to make certain that the air pressure in your apartment is slightly greater than the air pressure in an adjoining polluted apartment.
